The 185th Reggimento Ricognizione Acquisizione Obiettivi RRAO (Reconnaissance and Target Acquisition Regiment) was formed as a detached unit from the famous Folgore Paratrooper Brigade to specialize in Special Reconnaissance and target acquisition behind enemy lines.

A patch with a distinctly operational character, dedicated to one of the most technical entities in the Italian SOF environment. The regiment's motto "Videre nec videri" (Latin: "to see without being seen" or "to see unseen") perfectly expresses its role. The SF operators of the 185th RRAO perform Special Reconnaissance (SR) in hostile environments (and beyond) to gather strategic information, identify sensitive targets, coordinate air support, artillery fire, and other precision operations as required.

Therefore they are silent and highly technical operators, essential in modern theaters. In addition to performing Special Reconnaissance, the 185th RRAO's tasks include DA (Direct Action) and MA (Military Assistance).

The RRAO represents one of the most selective units in the Italian Army. Since 2014, like the 9th Parachute Assault Regiment "Col Moschin", it has been part of the new COMFOSE (Comando delle forze speciali dell’Esercito, Army Special Forces Command), with responsibility for ensuring unified training, preparation, procedural development and material acquisition for the Army's Special Forces division.
