The 1° Reggimento Carabinieri Paracadutisti "Tuscania" (1st Carabinieri Paratroopers Regiment "Tuscania") is part of the 2ª Brigata mobile carabinieri (2nd Carabinieri Mobile Brigade) together with units such as the GIS (Special Intervention Groups - Anti-Terrorism Task Unit TUAT). Since 2024, the unit has been validated as a "TIER 2" Special Force, confirming the operational and training level achieved by the Tuscania within the landscape of Italian Special Forces.
Until 2002, the unit was instead under the command of the "Folgore" Paratroopers Brigade of the Italian Army.

The origins of the 1st Paratrooper Regiment date back to the very first paratrooper units of the Carabinieri, founded in the 1940s, which evolved over time to become one of the most selective operational units of the Italian Armed Forces.

The "Tuscania" performs military, training, and police tasks: airborne operations, guerrilla and counter-guerrilla warfare, protection of sensitive targets, support for Special Forces, security of national diplomatic missions abroad, and international deployments.
Over the years, the unit has been deployed in out-of-area missions and high-risk scenarios, including: Lebanon (1982-1984), Bosnia (1996-2003), Afghanistan (since 2001), and Iraq (since 2003).

The regiment also operates on the national territory as law enforcement in areas which, due to their morphological and socio-criminal characteristics, are difficult for territorial police to control; Numerous anti-kidnapping, anti-smuggling, and anti-crime operations.
